I'm interested in Sri Lanka's recent history. Are there appropriate places to visit and how should tourists approach them?

The main sites are in the north and east (Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi areas) and some memorials in Colombo. Approach with respect and sensitivity - this is still recent and painful history for many Sri Lankans. Go with a knowledgeable local guide who can provide context. Some sites are not set up for tourism. It's better to learn through conversations with locals and good books/guides than treating it as a checklist.

Many Sri Lankans prefer to focus on the present and future rather than the war years. Be sensitive in conversations. The best 'history' experiences often come from talking to people who've lived through it.
