The Wanni Complex—occupying the northwestern and north-central sectors of Sri Lanka—consists predominantly of amphibolite- to granulite-facies orthogneisses, migmatites, and calc-silicate rocks representing an accreted island-arc terrane. Field exposures along the Kurunegala-Puttalam highway reveal prominent NW-SE trending ductile shear fabrics, folded quartz-feldspar leucosomes (melt segregations), and hornblende-biotite gneiss bands. The complex is distinguished from the adjacent Highland Complex by higher proportions of calc-alkaline granitoid plutons and lower pressure metamorphic mineral assemblages.
