Weligama Bay hosts hundreds of beginner surfers daily on foam softboards, making lineup etiquette critical. The cardinal rule: the surfer closest to the breaking curl (peak) has absolute right of way; never "drop in" on a wave someone is already riding. When paddling out from the beach, paddle wide through the deeper rip channels flanking the breaks rather than straight through the impact zone. If caught in front of an approaching surfer, paddle toward the broken whitewater behind them, leaving the open green wave face clear for their turn.
Never discard or let go of your surfboard when duck-diving or taking whitewash on the head; a loose 8-foot foam board can strike swimmers behind you.
Beginners practicing pop-ups should remain in waist-deep water catching broken white rollers before attempting the deeper outside green wave peaks.
Respect local surf instructors guiding students; give working lesson groups a wide safety buffer to prevent leash entanglements.
