Weligama Bay beginner surf lessons: tide selection, foam boards, and Polwatta river rip currents?

Weligama Bay is an ideal beginner surf arena featuring a gently sloping sand bottom and rolling white-water waves. The best conditions for learning occur on mid-to-incoming high tides (0.3m to 0.7m tide height). At extreme low tide, waves dump directly onto shallow sandbars, increasing nose-dive board dings. Beginners should use 8ft to 9ft high-density foam softboards. Avoid the far western corner near the Polwatta River mouth; river outflow creates a persistent outgoing rip current that pulls paddlers out towards the commercial fishing boat anchorage.
