From Katunayake, ask whether the boat actually leaves that harbour. A lot of 'tickets' are a van to Mirissa (or Trinco). Sea is a flag question, not a promise of whales.

Waited on a cancellation in Mirissa and still saw nothing. Fine. Don't rebuild the whole day around a boat.

If you're tired, stay nearer the bus stand / town centre in Katunayake and skip chasing a perfect sunset. Pull cash in Colombo, Kandy, or Galle first — cards are a maybe. Locals will tell you if a ticket is counter-only.
