The absolute must see monument is the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa. It is a massive, gleaming white dome guarded by a wall of hundreds of carved elephants. It is the most sacred and visually stunning stupa in the city.

You must also visit the Abhayagiri Dagoba, an immense ancient brick stupa set in a peaceful wooded area, and the Jetavanaramaya, which was once one of the tallest structures in the ancient world.
