Watalappan is a deeply rich, incredibly delicious traditional dessert. It is a steamed custard made primarily from dark kithul palm jaggery, thick coconut milk, eggs, and warm spices like cardamom and nutmeg.

Because it relies heavily on eggs to create the custard texture, it is unfortunately not vegan. However, it is naturally dairy free since it uses coconut milk instead of cow milk.

You will find it on almost every restaurant dessert menu, especially during festive seasons. The dark, caramel like flavor of the local jaggery makes it an absolute must try for anyone with a sweet tooth.
