What is the best way to explore the historic Galle Fort.
I have one full day in Galle and want to make the most of the famous Dutch fort. Should I join a guided walking tour or explore independently and what are the absolute must see spots.

Galle Fort is best explored on foot at a leisurely pace as the entire walled area covers only about ninety hectares. Start your visit early around seven in the morning before the heat and tour bus crowds arrive. Walk the entire rampart loop which takes roughly ninety minutes and offers spectacular views of both the Indian Ocean and the historic streets within. Key highlights include the iconic Galle Lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church dating from 1755, the Maritime Archaeological Museum, the All Saints Church, and the impressive Old Gate with its original Dutch coat of arms. A guided two hour walking tour costs around two thousand rupees and brings the colonial history vividly to life with fascinating stories about Portuguese conquests, Dutch trade, and British rule. After lunch explore the charming boutique shops, art galleries, and gem stores hidden along Pedlar Street, Church Street, and Leyn Baan Street. Stay until sunset to watch the famous local cliff divers perform near the Flag Rock bastion. Galle Fort transforms beautifully in the golden hour light making it a photographers absolute dream destination.
