Yes 500 Rupees for a single King Coconut known locally as Thambili is a massive aggressive tourist markup. The fair standard local price across the island currently ranges exactly between 150 and 200 Sri Lankan Rupees.

If a vendor demands 500 simply smile shake your head and boldly offer 200. If they refuse just walk away confidently. You will absolutely find another honest vendor selling them just a few meters down the road.

If you are purchasing one directly on a highly commercialized beach like Unawatuna or inside a luxury hotel you might pay 300 Rupees for the convenience. But on a standard Colombo street 150 Rupees is the correct fair price.
