Late May is the start of the southwest monsoon on the south and west coasts, so pack a foldable waterproof jacket or poncho even though most days are still warm and sunny between showers. Layers matter: it is hot and humid at the coast but genuinely cool in the hills (Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Horton Plains at dawn), so bring one light fleece/long-sleeve. For temples, a single lightweight scarf or sarong is enough; throw it over shoulders and knees on entry and remove shoes and hat. A backpack beats a suitcase here because of trains and rough pavements.

Add reef-safe sunscreen and strong mosquito repellent (these are pricier and harder to find locally), plus a quick-dry travel towel. A sarong doubles as temple cover, beach mat and train blanket.

Brilliant, packing a poncho, one fleece, a sarong and proper shoes. Go raibh maith agat!

Leave space in the bag, the spice and textile markets are too tempting. And a reusable filter water bottle saves a fortune in plastic.

Flip-flops for the beach but bring real shoes/trainers for Sigiriya, Pidurangala and any hike. The rock steps are no fun in sandals.
