Matara Fort is vastly different from Galle. It is much smaller and not commercialized with boutique cafes at all. It is essentially a quiet local neighborhood surrounded by ancient Dutch ramparts.

The absolute highlight is the Star Fort a unique perfectly star shaped defensive structure located just outside the main ramparts. It is a brilliant piece of military architecture and houses a small fascinating museum.

Inside the main fort you can visit the beautifully preserved old Dutch church and walk along the grassy walls. It takes only an hour to see but it is highly authentic and completely free of tourist crowds.
