Every year during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, the local astrologers declare a specific auspicious color that brings good luck for the new cycle. The entire country embraces this, and you will see almost everyone wearing that specific color on the festival day. To immerse yourself respectfully in the celebrations, simply ask your hotel staff what the auspicious color is a few days beforehand, and wear a simple t shirt or dress in that shade. The locals will be absolutely thrilled to see tourists participating in their cultural traditions.
