The undisputed star of the Avurudu table is kiribath which is rich creamy milk rice cut into diamond shapes. It is traditionally served with a spicy onion sambol called lunu miris and sometimes with jaggery or banana. Eating kiribath at the auspicious time marks the start of the new year.

You absolutely must try the traditional sweets known collectively as kewili. These include kokis which are crispy flower shaped fritters, kavum which are deep fried oil cakes, aluwa which is a diamond shaped semolina sweet, and aasmi which is a delicate lacy treat. Every household prepares these together as a family activity.
