When is the best month to see flamingos in Mannar Sri Lanka?
3 Answers from travellers
The absolute peak month for flamingo sightings in Mannar is January when several thousand greater flamingos gather in massive flocks across the Vankalai Sanctuary and Vidattaltivu lagoons. The birds arrive from late November and gradually depart by early April. January offers both the largest numbers and the most active feeding behavior making it perfect for stunning photographs.
Bring a telephoto lens of at least four hundred millimeters as the flamingos remain quite skittish and keep their distance from humans. Wear neutral earth toned clothing and move very slowly when approaching. Mannar is also home to over hundred and fifty other migratory bird species so even non flamingo days yield amazing sightings.
Hire a local birding guide from Mannar town for around three thousand rupees per half day. They know the exact locations where the flamingos feed at different times of day and will help you find the best photography angles. Early morning around six thirty offers the most beautiful golden light and the calmest reflective water surfaces.
