Calendars show May 1 as a Poya but I heard the main celebrations are different. Which weekend will have the big lanterns in Colombo.

While May 1 is a Poya day, the official State Vesak Festival in 2026 will be observed on May 30. This decision aligns with the traditional astrological alignment for the Buddha Birth and Enlightenment celebrations. Target the weekend of May 30 for the most spectacular lantern displays and pandals in Colombo and Kandy. Note that May 1 remains a spiritual day but will also be very crowded due to May Day rallies.
