I heard there are wild horses left by the Portuguese in Mannar. Are they easy to find and do I need a special permit to visit the wetlands where they roam.

The feral horses are most commonly found in the open scrublands and wetlands near the Korakulum tank just west of Mannar city. You do not need a special permit to view them as they roam freely across the island. The best time to see them is early morning or late afternoon when they come out to graze. These animals are descendants of horses brought by the Portuguese and later the Dutch. Please keep a respectful distance as they are truly wild and can be skittish.

If you visit during the rainy season, the wetlands can be quite muddy, so a four wheel drive vehicle is helpful. While you are there, look out for the Baobab trees, some of which are over seven hundred years old, also brought by ancient traders.
