I want really good Sri Lankan tea, not the tourist shop stuff. Any recommendations for direct purchases?

Some smaller estates and cooperatives sell directly or through their own small shops. In Nuwara Eliya and Hatton areas you can sometimes buy from estate factories or small producers. 'Tea Trails' and similar places often have excellent selections. In Colombo, specialty tea shops and the Good Market have high-quality options from smaller producers. Ask at the estates you visit during tours - some will sell you fresh tea at better prices than tourist shops.

The tea you buy at a factory right after processing is noticeably fresher. Many places will vacuum-pack it for travel. Avoid anything pre-packaged in fancy tourist boxes if you want the best quality.
