You are right to be suspicious; many "batik factories" on the tourist routes are commission shops selling printed fabric as batik. Real batik is hand-drawn with hot wax and dyed in multiple passes, so the design appears equally clear on BOTH sides of the fabric (printing only marks one side). Press the fabric to the light and check the reverse. Genuine artisan workshops worth visiting: Buddhi Batiks in Bentota (Buddhi Keerthisena is a recognised artist, watch the studio at work), Jezlook Batiks in Talpe near Galle (small family workshop), and the small village producers around Matara. For HANDLOOM: visit a producer cooperative like Selyn (fair trade certified, with shops in Colombo and Kandy) or the Barefoot Gallery in Colombo (their handloom range is genuinely woven, not factory). Avoid roadside batik "factories" that your driver suggests stopping at, they pay commission and prices are 3x normal.

Selyn in Kandy was the highlight souvenir stop of my trip. Met the weavers, watched the looms, bought directly. Felt good.

For a more affordable handloom sarong, the Laksala government craft shops in Colombo and Kandy sell decent producer fabrics at fixed prices. Lower end but honest.

Real batik with multiple colour layers has a slight "crackle" effect from the wax breaking during dyeing; this is part of its beauty. Smooth, perfectly even backgrounds are usually printed.
