I really want to experience authentic local street food but I am terrified of getting sick during my trip. What dishes are generally considered safe and what should I avoid.

Stick to freshly cooked hot foods that are prepared right in front of you. Kottu roti is a fantastic safe choice as it is chopped and stir fried on a scorching hot griddle that kills any bacteria. Hoppers cooked in small clay pans, freshly fried vadai, and isso wade prawn fritters are also excellent street food options.

The popular short eats sold at local bakeries are generally very safe as they are baked at high temperatures. Try fish buns, vegetable rolls, fish patties, and seeni sambol buns. These make perfect cheap snacks during long bus or train journeys across the country.

Avoid pre cut fruit displayed openly on carts as flies and dust contamination is a real concern. If you want fresh fruit choose whole pieces that you can peel yourself like bananas, mangoes, and king coconuts. Never accept ice in your drinks from street vendors as it may be made from untreated tap water.
