During our drive we saw cattle just standing in the middle of busy highways. Is this normal and what should drivers do when encountering them on the road.

Free roaming cattle and water buffalo are a completely normal sight on rural Sri Lankan roads especially in the dry zone areas. Most cows actually do have owners who let them graze openly during the day and return home in the evening. They often seek the warm asphalt surface in the cool early morning or evening hours.

Always slow down significantly and give cattle the absolute right of way. Never honk loudly or try to scare them as they can become startled and unpredictably charge into your vehicle. Drive around them slowly and patiently. Hitting a cow can result in serious vehicle damage and you may also face angry confrontation from local villagers.
