We want to hike to the top of Diyaluma Falls for wild swimming. Are the upper pools safe to swim in during late April or is the water flow too strong.

Late April is the inter-monsoon season. While the upper pools are spectacular for wild swimming, the water levels can rise drastically and suddenly if it rains higher up in the mountains. Always stay in the pools further back from the main 700 foot drop, and immediately exit the water if it turns slightly muddy, as that signals a flash flood.

The water in those upper rock pools is crystal clear and surprisingly refreshing. It is like a natural infinity pool looking over the valley.

Do not pay the guys at the bottom who say you need a guide for the road. Drive your scooter up to Poonagala village and hike down to the upper falls from there. It is much easier.

If you decide to camp up there, bring all your trash back down. The local eco-systems are very fragile and the wind easily blows plastic off the cliff edge.
