Will Sri Lankan customs charge tourists for bringing professional camera gear.
I am bringing two camera bodies, multiple lenses, and a gimbal for personal travel photography. Will customs at the airport stop me or charge import duties on my professional equipment.

Tourists are generally allowed to bring personal photography equipment without paying any duty as long as the gear is clearly for personal use rather than commercial sale. Customs officers at Bandaranaike airport may ask questions if you arrive with multiple expensive bodies and lenses but explaining you are a hobbyist or travel blogger usually resolves any concerns immediately. Carry your equipment in a single discreet camera backpack rather than multiple shiny cases. Keep all original purchase receipts handy to prove the items are used personal property and not new merchandise. Some travelers prepare a simple packing list with serial numbers in case officers want documentation. If you plan any professional commercial work like paid photoshoots or commissioned content you must apply for a special filming permit in advance through the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Drones absolutely require separate permits regardless of personal or commercial intent. Insure all your gear before traveling as tropical humidity, heavy rain, salt spray, and dust can damage sensitive equipment quickly.
