The Sri Lankan Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus) relies heavily on seasonal forest fruiting cycles combined with insectivory. In Wilpattu and Yala, mature Palu trees (Manilkara hexandra) fruit synchronously between May and July. Sloth bears climb sturdy upper branches of Palu trees, using their long, curved 8cm non-retractile claws to pull fruit-laden branches toward their mouths. When fruit is scarce, they excavate subterranean termite mounds. Their specialized tooth structure (missing upper incisors) and vacuum-suction lips allow them to ingest thousands of termites rapidly.
Sloth bears have poor eyesight and hearing, making unexpected close encounters along bushy forest tracks dangerous if visitors startle foraging bears.
Safari jeeps must maintain a safe distance and cut engines immediately when a bear is spotted crossing sandy park roads.
Bears spend daytime hours resting inside cool hollow tree trunks or dense thorn thickets, emerging at dusk to forage across villu borders.
Tree trunks bearing deep vertical claw gouges indicate frequent bear climbing activity along established forest corridors.
