Yala Block 1 jeep waitlist full this week — switch to Wilpattu from Anuradhapura for leopard odds?
We are stuck near Tissa with no confirmed Yala jeep and keep hearing Block 1 is a mess of closures and crowds anyway in September. Partner suggests bus/train up and doing Wilpattu instead. We care about leopard chance without sitting in a convoy. Is that a smart pivot or a long detour for quieter tracks and still no guarantee?

Different parks, different moods. Yala (when Block access and jeeps align) is famous for leopard density and also for vehicle clusters. Wilpattu is larger, quieter, and often needs a fuller day and more patience — sightings are real but not a vending machine. September timing matters: Yala Block schedules and seasonal closures change, so confirm what is open with a reputable jeep desk rather than a WhatsApp rumor. If your Tissa waitlist is dead and you already planned Cultural Triangle logistics, Wilpattu from the northwest side can be the calmer bet. Book a licensed jeep, start early, no self-drive fantasies. Neither park sells certainty — only habitat and time.
When Block 1 access or jeeps are ugly, I tell people the truth: waitlist roulette or change parks. Udawalawe is elephants; Wilpattu is the quieter leopard alternative if you can move north.
Did both. Yala felt like a traffic jam with a reward; Wilpattu felt like a real drive. Saw leopard once in each — sample size of luck.
Cancelled the Tissa sit-around, routing via Anuradhapura for a Wilpattu dawn jeep. Fingers crossed, expectations managed.
From Habarana I can point people northwest easier than south when Yala is chaotic. Distance is real — budget a travel day.
