The incredibly ornate stone lions guarding the Yapahuwa staircase do indeed look highly distinct from classical Sinhalese carvings. They heavily feature Chinese architectural influence.

During the 13th century, the Yapahuwa kingdom had strong, established trade and diplomatic relations with China. It is believed that Chinese ambassadors or artisans directly influenced the rock carvings during King Bhuvanekabahus reign.
