Yapahuwa ancient stone lions, what do they represent?

During the 13th century, the Yapahuwa kingdom had strong, established trade and diplomatic relations with China. It is believed that Chinese ambassadors or artisans directly influenced the rock carvings during King Bhuvanekabahus reign.

These unique, bulging eyed lions were meant to fiercely protect the sacred Tooth Relic housed at the top of the stairs, combining local spiritual importance with international artistic flair.
