Yes an excellent lesser-known alternative. Yapahuwa (Kurunegala district) was a brief 13th century capital of Sri Lanka, with a dramatic 90m rock fortress and the famous ornate lion-guarded stone staircase (finer craftsmanship than Sigiriya's steel steps). Access via 350 steep steps. Small museum at base. Foreign entry ~USD 15.

Zero crowds most days. Combine with Panduwasnuwara ancient capital ruins (30 min drive) for a full off-beat historical day. Start climb early (7-9am) for coolness and clear photos of the staircase's carvings — some of the finest medieval stone work in Sri Lanka.
