Yoga retreat deposit marked non-refundable and I twisted my ankle — any chance of credit or is the money gone?
Paid a deposit for a week near Ahangama starting Monday. Doctor at home confirmed a sprain; I cannot do the asana schedule. Retreat email says deposits are non-refundable. Has anyone actually negotiated a date change or partial credit with a doctor note in Sri Lanka, or should I stop emailing and eat the loss? Not asking you to invent their policy — just traveler experience.

Written non-refundable usually means cash back is unlikely, especially close to the start date — but many small retreats will still discuss a date shift or credit if you send a clear doctor note early and stay polite. Ask for what you actually need: move to a later week, transfer to a friend, or a partial credit toward a shorter stay when you can walk. Do not demand a full refund as a moral right if you signed the terms; ask for goodwill options. Screenshot your medical advice and keep the thread in writing. Outcomes vary by host — some say no, some offer credit within a few months. I will not invent percentages.
Flu before a Bentota week. Sent note, got credit for six months, not cash. Annoying but usable later.
Emailing tonight with the scan and asking for a date change first. Will update if they budge.
Hosts hate last-minute ghosts more than honest injury emails. A calm ask beats a one-star threat.
