Is it cheaper to hire a activity provider or use tuk-tuks and buses?
For a single short hop, a tuk-tuk is cheaper — OneCeylon publishes community-reported fares for hundreds of routes so you can check what one should cost before you agree a price. For a multi-day trip the arithmetic usually flips, because Sri Lanka's distances are short but slow and connecting between the hill country and the coast by public transport costs days rather than rupees.
