Hill country tea guide so the tea factory tour picture a hill country highlight Where to do one the HILL COUNTRY (the tea growing high country) is where you do it the famous tea areas NUWARA ELIYA (the heart of high grown tea many estates and factories) the ELLA and Haputale and BANDARAWELA area (lovely factories and estates) HATTON and the DICKOYA and Maskeliya area (the high estates around the central hills) and the tea country generally there are many working tea ESTATES with FACTORIES that welcome visitors for tours (some famous historic estate factories offer excellent visitor tours) your hotel or driver can point you to a good one nearby What you see the PROCESS from leaf to cup a good factory tour walks you through the whole journey the PLUCKING (the tea pickers in the field plucking the two leaves and a bud often you see this on the estate the tea plucking threads) then inside the factory the WITHERING (the fresh leaves spread on long troughs to wilt and lose moisture) the ROLLING (the leaves rolled to release the juices and start oxidation) the OXIDATION or FERMENTING (the leaves left to oxidise turning them dark developing flavour) the DRYING or firing (drying the leaves to stop oxidation) the SORTING and GRADING (sieving and grading into the different grades the big leaf to the fine dust the grades the tea buying threads) you see the machinery (much of it old and characterful) smell the wonderful aroma and follow the transformation from green leaf to black tea a fascinating process Is there a tasting USUALLY YES most factory tours end with a TEA TASTING (sampling the estate teas the different grades freshly made) and a chance to buy the estate tea (fresh and often excellent value a great place to buy good tea the tea buying threads) the tasting is a lovely finish How long the factory tour itself is fairly short (often around half an hour to an hour for the tour plus the tasting) so it is an easy add on (combine with admiring the estate and the views) Which factories good for visitors several well known estate factories in the tea areas are set up for tourists with proper guided tours (ask your accommodation or driver for a good working factory tour nearby the famous estates around Nuwara Eliya Ella Haputale and Hatton) choose a working factory with a proper guided tour Is it worth it YES definitely understanding how your cup of Ceylon tea is made (and seeing it amid the gorgeous tea covered hills) is a hill country essential and the tasting and fresh tea to buy are a bonus June note the hills are in the southwest monsoon now (mist and rain likely the seasonal threads) which is atmospheric for the tea country (the misty estates are beautiful) just bring a layer and rain gear the factories are indoors anyway So do a TEA FACTORY tour in the hill country (Nuwara Eliya Ella Haputale Hatton the tea areas) at a working estate factory you follow the whole process plucking withering rolling oxidising drying and grading (leaf to cup) usually finished with a TASTING and a chance to buy fresh estate tea it takes about an hour is easy to combine with the estate views and is absolutely worth it to understand your Ceylon tea ask your accommodation for a good working factory tour nearby
