How much time do I realistically need to explore the ancient city of Anuradhapura? Is one full day enough on a bicycle?

One full day is plenty. The site is massive, but the main highlights (Ruwanwelisaya stupa, Sri Maha Bodhi tree, Jetavanaramaya) can all be seen comfortably in about 6-8 hours. Start at 7:00 AM before the blazing sun hits.

Don't bicycle Anuradhapura! I love cycling, but the distances between the major stupas are huge, and the modern city traffic cuts through the ruins. Hire a tuk-tuk driver for the day for $15, it will save you from heatstroke.

Oh wow, I thought it was closed off like Polonnaruwa. I will definitely hire a tuk-tuk then. Thanks Peter.
