Heritage guide so the Arankele picture a serene forest hermitage gem What it is ARANKELE (near Kurunegala in the northwest the Kurunegala threads) is an ancient FOREST MONASTERY (an aranya senasanaya a hermitage) where forest dwelling meditating monks lived in seclusion centuries ago it dates back many centuries (an early medieval forest monastery) and the ruins lie scattered through a beautiful quiet FOREST The experience and what is there a peaceful walk through the forest among the RUINS the stone foundations and remains of the monastery (the monks dwellings the meditation structures) the distinctive PADHANAGHARA (the double platform meditation structures linked by a stone bridge austere flat platforms where monks meditated typical of these forest hermitages) a long ancient stone MEDITATION WALKWAY (a jantaghara and the cankamana the walking meditation path) ponds and a serene forest atmosphere it is atmospheric tranquil and contemplative the ruins under the forest canopy evoke the austere meditative life of the forest monks History an ancient forest monastery tradition (the forest dwelling meditative monks the pamsukulika ascetic tradition) it is a window into the austere spiritual life of these hermitages Compared to Ritigala VERY similar in spirit Arankele and RITIGALA are both ancient forest hermitages with the distinctive double platform structures stone paths and serene forest ruins (Ritigala is larger and more famous and in the cultural triangle the Ritigala threads) Arankele is smaller quieter and even less visited (near Kurunegala) so if you loved Ritigala you will love Arankele or if you want one of these serene forest monasteries off the crowds Arankele is a peaceful choice How to get there from KURUNEGALA it is a short trip (north of Kurunegala) by road (car driver or tuk tuk) from the cultural triangle it is a side trip on the Kurunegala side (it can pair with Kurunegala the Yapahuwa and Ridi Viharaya area or en route the Kurunegala and Ridi threads) a car or driver is easiest Is it peaceful YES wonderfully so it is quiet little visited and deeply serene (the whole point of a forest hermitage) you may have the forest ruins largely to yourself a meditative escape June note the northwest dry zone is reasonable in June (some rain possible but generally okay the seasonal threads) and the forest is shady and atmospheric So yes Arankele is worth visiting for a lover of quiet ruins and forest hermitages an ancient serene FOREST MONASTERY near Kurunegala with ruins the distinctive double platform meditation structures and a long stone meditation walkway scattered through a tranquil forest very much in the spirit of Ritigala but smaller quieter and less visited reach it by road from Kurunegala (a side trip from the cultural triangle) for a deeply peaceful contemplative escape among the ancient forest ruins

If you found Ritigala magical Arankele gives you the same austere meditative forest ruins with even fewer people I walked the ancient meditation pathway almost alone and the stillness was profound a perfect quiet counterpoint to the busy main sites
