No, you are not allowed to carry large backpacks or heavy day bags into the exhibition halls of the Colombo National Museum. The security guards at the main entrance will politely ask you to leave your bags at the secure, free locker counter located right near the ticket booth. You are perfectly fine to keep your camera, phone, and wallet with you, but bulky bags must be stored to protect the ancient artifacts from accidental bumps.
