I stepped on an urchin in Indonesia once and it ruined my week. Do I need reef booties for Sri Lanka's south coast?

Only if you are surfing over shallow reef breaks (like Midigama or Mirissa Point). Sandy beach breaks like Weligama, Unawatuna, or Hikkaduwa have zero sea urchins. It is just pure sand.

If you do get spiked, local surfers swear by pouring hot wax or hot lime juice on it and hitting the spot with a flip-flop to break up the spine so the body absorbs it faster! Sounds crazy but it works.

If you are surfing a reef break, reef booties are highly recommended. A spine in your foot will keep you out of the water for days.
