Are the beaches in Negombo clean enough for swimming.

While Negombo beach is fantastic for sunset walks and features incredible beachside restaurants it is generally not considered the best beach for swimming. Because it is located near a busy fishing harbor and a massive lagoon mouth the water can often be slightly murky.
The sand is occasionally littered with debris washing ashore from the nearby city. If you want pristine crystal clear water for swimming it is highly recommended to save your beach time for the southern or eastern coasts and just enjoy the hotel pool while in Negombo.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
