The vast majority of stray dogs in Sri Lanka are completely docile, lazy, and accustomed to humans. They spend most of the day sleeping in the shade and will generally completely ignore you unless you offer them food.

While physical attacks are extremely rare, they can become territorial and bark loudly at night. If a dog barks at you, do not run. Simply walk past confidently and ignore it. Never try to pet a stray dog to avoid any risk of bites or rabies.
