I am considering a solo backpacking trip. Is Sri Lanka generally safe for tourists, and what are the most common scams or safety concerns I should watch out for.

Yes, Sri Lanka is very safe for tourists. Violent crime against foreigners is extremely rare, and locals are known for their incredible hospitality. However, like any popular travel destination, there are minor scams to watch out for. The most common scam is tuk tuk drivers overcharging tourists. To avoid this, always negotiate the price before getting into a tuk tuk, or better yet, use local ride hailing apps like PickMe or Uber which provide fixed transparent pricing. Another common annoyance is fake guides at historical sites. Always hire licensed guides who wear official government identification.

Regarding health safety, tap water is not safe to drink in Sri Lanka. Always stick to bottled or properly filtered water to avoid stomach issues. Also, remember to pack good mosquito repellent containing DEET to protect against dengue fever, especially during the rainy seasons.

For solo female travelers, Sri Lanka is generally quite safe. Just use standard precautions. Dress modestly when away from the beach, especially when visiting religious sites where shoulders and knees must be covered. Avoid walking alone on unlit stretches of beach late at night.
