I am a solo female traveler planning to attend the Esala Perahera. Are the massive nighttime crowds safe and what precautions should I take during the festival.

The Perahera is generally considered very safe for solo female travelers as the entire festival is heavily policed with thousands of officers deployed throughout the streets. However the crowds become extremely dense and pickpocketing is unfortunately common. Keep your valuables in a secure money belt worn under your clothing. Book a reserved seat rather than standing in the street crowds for both safety and a much better view.

Arrange for your hotel to organize a tuk tuk to pick you up immediately after the procession ends. Walking back to your accommodation through the dispersing crowds can be confusing and tiring. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered out of respect for the religious nature of the event.
