I am learning to surf in Weligama. Should I be worried about shark attacks? I never hear it mentioned.

Zero concern. Shark attacks on surfers in Sri Lanka are practically non-existent. There are small reef sharks, but they are terrified of humans and stay far away from the noisy, sandy breaks like Weligama.

In the entire recorded history of the country, there are almost zero unprovoked shark attacks near the shore. You have a higher chance of a coconut falling on your head. Enjoy the water!

The only dangerous marine life you should watch out for are sea urchins if you surf over a shallow reef. But in sandy Weligama, you are completely safe.
