Wild elephants can be extremely dangerous if provoked. While they often stand calmly near electric fences begging for fruit along roads like the Buttala Kataragama highway, they are wild, unpredictable animals capable of flipping a car easily.

If you encounter an elephant on the road, you must stop your vehicle at a very safe distance. Never honk your horn, flash your high beams, or rev your engine, as this will anger them. Wait patiently for them to cross or move away.

Absolutely never get out of your vehicle to take a selfie. Stay inside with the engine running, and if the elephant begins walking towards you aggressively, reverse slowly and safely.
