I want to see how real Ceylon cinnamon is harvested, but I want to avoid the fake tourist spice gardens. Any recommendations?

Take a boat tour on Koggala Lake. There is "Cinnamon Island" where real families have been peeling cinnamon for generations. They show you the process, offer you cinnamon tea, and you can buy direct from them. It is very authentic.

Also check out Handunugoda Tea Estate nearby. They are famous for Virgin White Tea, but they also grow cinnamon, rubber, and pepper. It is a proper working estate, totally free to tour.

Yes, the Koggala lake boat trip is awesome! Handing the peelers a tip directly feels much better than buying overpriced jars from a highway shop.
