We want to stay directly on a working tea estate in Haputale. Are there homestays where we can eat local food and walk the fields.

Yes! There are many community-based tourism initiatives where estate families have upgraded a spare room in their "line houses" for tourists. You will eat the authentic, incredibly spicy Tamil food they cook daily, and you can walk the dirt paths through the estate to watch the pluckers working. It is a raw, beautiful cultural experience.

Bring warm clothes! Those tin-roof rooms have zero heating and it drops to 12 degrees at night.

Do we need to bring our own bottled water.

Do not walk directly through the tea bushes! It damages the crops. Stick to the dirt paths.

Ask your host to show you how they make fresh coconut roti on the wood fire. It is amazing.

The strong estate tea they give you in the morning makes the cold completely worth it.

They will provide boiled water which is 100% safe, but bring bottled if you have a very sensitive stomach.
