We want to experience real life on a tea estate. Are there homestays run by actual estate workers in Hatton, or is it only luxury planter bungalows.

There is a growing trend of community-based tourism. While luxury bungalows dominate the marketing, you can find small, authentic homestays in the "line rooms" (estate worker villages) near Hatton and Norwood. These are very basic, but you eat exactly what the families eat (like Kithul roti and strong black tea) and the money goes directly to the marginalized estate communities.

It is a very humbling experience. The line rooms are tiny and lack heating, so bring warm clothes because Hatton gets freezing at night.

Ask your host to show you how they pluck the "two leaves and a bud". It is backbreaking work and gives you huge respect for your morning cup of tea.
