Authentic tea homestays for wellness and yoga near Kandy
5 Answers from travellers
Look away from the noisy Kandy city center. Head up into the hills towards Hanthana or Ampitiya. Many family-run homestays there practice Ayurvedic lifestyles. While they might not have a formal Yoga Shala, the hosts will gladly prepare wellness meals like Kola Kenda (herbal porridge) and provide a quiet garden overlooking the tea mountains for your practice.
Visit the Nilambe Meditation Centre nearby if you want a hardcore silent retreat experience.
Hanthana sounds beautiful. I will search for eco-lodges in that specific area.
Make sure to explicitly ask the host for Ayurvedic vegetarian food when booking, otherwise they will make standard heavy curries.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
