Never buy a ticket from a random tout on the beach in Mirissa. They represent the rogue, unethical speedboats that harass the animals. Research online and ONLY book with companies that explicitly advertise adherence to WDC (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) guidelines, which mandate a 100-meter distance. Raja and the Whales is widely considered the safest and most ethical operator in the area.

If your captain starts aggressively revving the engine to chase a spout, yell at him to stop. Tourist pressure works.

Also, ensure the boat is a large, multi-level vessel. The small fiberglass boats get terrifyingly tossed around in the deep ocean swells.
