We are renting bikes in Polonnaruwa. Are the food and drink stalls inside the archaeological park safe, or are they tourist traps that overcharge.

The vendors selling King Coconuts and water inside the park are generally honest, but they do charge a slight "tourist premium" (maybe 50 LKR more) because of the location. Always ask "how much" before they chop the coconut open. Do NOT buy the cut fruit sitting on ice blocks; the water is untreated and you will get a stomach bug. Stick to sealed bottles and coconuts.

Watch out for the monkeys! They will literally snatch a packet of biscuits right out of your bicycle basket.

Yes, 100 to 150 LKR is the standard local price. If they ask for 500, walk away.

For a real meal, ride your bike out of the park back to the clock tower junction. The local buffets there are cheap and excellent.
