Never surfed before. Which beach has the safest, sand-bottom waves and cheapest board rentals for a week of learning?

Weligama is the undisputed beginner capital. It is a massive, protected sandy bay with mellow white water rolling in forever. There are dozens of pop-up surf schools right on the sand charging about $10-$15 for a lesson.

If you are going during the East Coast season (May-Sept), go to Whiskey Point near Arugam Bay. But generally, Weligama is perfect. The water is warm and the vibe is super encouraging.
