Mount Lavinia is close but can be busy. Further like Kalutara or Beruwala are better if you want quieter. Rent a car or take train.

Train to Kalutara is easy and cheap. Beach there is long and not too touristy.

I went to Mount Lavinia last week, was okay but lots of locals. For quiet try further south.

Yeah Beruwala has some nice stretches. Less packed than Negombo.
