We are doing the elephant gathering safari in Minneriya Will a 200mm lens be enough or do the jeeps stay very far back for safety

A 70-200mm lens is actually perfect for Minneriya. During the Gathering the elephants congregate on the open grass plains near the reservoir. The jeeps can get relatively close safely and the elephants often walk right past the vehicles. A 600mm lens is often too tight for herd shots Bring a wide angle lens as well for environmental landscapes.

Do not stand up quickly or make loud noises when you are shooting It scares them

Bring a polarizing filter The glare off the reservoir water in the late afternoon ruins photos otherwise.

A beanbag is better You can rest it on the metal roof rails of the jeep for perfect stability
