Best Kola Kanda stalls in Colombo to recover from rooftop parties
4 Answers from travellers
Kola Kanda is the ultimate traditional detox! The best spots are usually small carts parked near walking paths. Head to Diyatha Uyana in Battaramulla or just outside the gates of Viharamahadevi Park early in the morning. Ask for "Gotukola" or "Hathawariya" kanda; they are specifically known to cool the body, aid digestion, and support liver function after consuming alcohol.
Make sure you eat the small piece of raw jaggery they give you with it! The porridge itself is very earthy and slightly bitter, so you bite the sweet jaggery before taking a sip to balance the flavor.
You have to go early. Most of the authentic aunties running these carts sell out of the best brews by 8:30 AM.
If you sleep in and miss the morning carts, you can actually order decent Kola Kanda on UberEats from local healthy cafes like Cafe Kumbuk, though it costs a lot more.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
