I am an avid birder with heavy telephoto gear. For migratory and endemic birds, should I book a safari in Bundala or Kumana?

For pure birding, Bundala National Park is unmatched. It is a Ramsar wetland site. The combination of lagoons, salt pans, and scrub jungle attracts massive flocks of flamingos, painted storks, and bee-eaters. It is also completely devoid of the jeep crowds found in Yala.

Bundala it is! The Ramsar wetland status sells it for me. Thank you.

Bundala for wetlands, Kumana if you want a mix of birds and a high chance of spotting a leopard crossing the road.

The light for photography in Bundala at 6:00 AM is stunning over the salt pans. Make sure your driver knows you are there for birds, so they drive slowly and kill the engine often.

Bundala is much easier to access if you are staying on the South Coast (near Hambantota/Tissa). Kumana requires driving all the way over to the East Coast past Arugam Bay.
